HENRY’S BRIDGE

Alex Barr moved from Manchester to a smallholding in Pembrokeshire in 1996. The move has inspired much of his later work. The poems in this collection have appeared in leading poetry magazines in the UK, USA, Ireland, and Canada. In 2000 he won third prizes in both the National Poetry Competition and the Peterloo Poetry Competition. His first collection, Letting in the Carnival, was published by Peterloo in 1984.

Alex Barr was born in Manchester and educated at Manchester Grammar School. After seven years in journalism in various cities, he studied at Portsmouth Polytechnic and was awarded a Diploma in Architecture with distinction in 1972. Most of his subsequent career was as a senior lecturer in the Art & Design Faculty at Manchester Polytechnic (now MMU). He is married to Rosemarie, a ceramic artist.

HIGH JUNE

This collection of fifty new poems reveals a writer with a fine sensitivity and acute observational powers. The poet and critic A. Alvarez has written of Ann Byrne-Sutton and High June that she has "... a lovely, wry, light-fingered touch, as though she didn't want to be taken in, even by herself... High June is full of good poems. Grandmothers Footsteps (one of the poems) should be in all the anthologies..."

HOLM by Peter Naumann

HOLM cover front

Paperback with flaps, 98 pp  ISBN 978 1 899530 50 2   price  £7.50

Peter Naumann made his striking debut as a poet in 2014 with the publication of his first book WINTER COUNT.

Holm, at once oak and island, evokes Bristol and its environs, where Peter Naumann’s new poems were made. The dark-leaved
mediterranean tree which contributes so much to the city’s mosaic of light and shadow, and the domed islands in the Severn, stepping
stones on the way to Wales by water, can each stand as figures for a place – and a time – which, though by turns cryptic, lonely, and
precarious, nevertheless retains a sly humour and a stubborn faith, and somehow remains home.

Samantha Wynne Rhydderch said of Peter Naumann’s
previous collection, Winter Count: "The poems are like
x-rays, revealing the unseen
essence of people and the
objects they live with."

"Carvoeiro & Other Sequences has beautiful lyrical impact in its unusual and startling capacity for making language new in its arrangements and phrases. It also stood out through the sophisticated mastery of closed and open forms contained within it. The sonnet sequence is stunning. It is very difficult to write in this strict form with the naturalness of measured voice that Peter Oram achieves. This contrasts well against the looser, spacious and organic verse sequence 'Six Premature Ejaculations' that shows daring in both form and content." - Bob Beagrie & Andy Willoughby

Peter Oram was born in Cardiff in 1947, and has first class honours degrees in modern languages and composition. He has been active as writer, composer, translator, painter and guitarist. His publications include the novels Maddocks (Gomer 1997) and The Rub (Starborn 2001), The Page and the Fire (translations from the Russian, Arc 2007), three volumes of Rilke's French poetry in English translation; two volumes of poetry, White and Tease it Free (Starborn 2001 and 2012). He now lives in Germany near Nuremberg.

LULL OF THE BULL

Although this is the first collection by Cardigan poet Paul Steffan Jones, he is already well represented in the better poetry magazines, and it can only serve to consolidate and enhance his status as a poet with a strikingly original voice. He draws a potent personal mythology out of the Welsh landscape, penetrating its dark, visceral essence and illuminating with a curious light its intimate interior.

“You will only know your true name
when it is almost too late
and the buttercups burst through each pore
to make a bouquet of you...”

“He writes like no one else. Paul Steffan Jones’ poems in their squeakily hinged way… smash a poetry shaped fist through the dull inertia found on 99% of bookshops’ poetry shelves...”
Peter Knaggs (Editor, The Slab)

ORCHARDS

translated from the French by Peter Oram and Alex Barr

Of the over 400 poems that Rilke wrote in French, the cycle Vergers is probably the most important. Orchards is a new translation of that work, in which Rilke explores in concise and almost epigrammatic verses the relationship between the poet, his sources of inspiration and the reader.

Also included in this volume is an essay by Peter Oram which discusses the extraordinarily complex structure, based on principles of symmetry and the Golden Section, underlying this work.

POEMS

Ruthlessly honest and self-critical, the poems of Phil Malleson are the chronicles of a highly sensitive and uncompromising individual for whom aloneness and poverty were preferable to collusion in a corrupt, money-and-power-obsessed culture bent on the destruction of itself and its habitat. Their vocabulary and idiom often appear rough-cut and produced off the cuff, yet closer examination shows a conscious and exceptionally widely-read mind at work. Malleson wrote elsewhere of the ‘hundreds of drafts’ many of his poems had to go through before he could let them be, and the sometimes (seemingly) waywardly stretched syntax seems to keep guard over a lyricism that is always trying to get through. All the poems in this book are taken from Phil Malleson’s sporadic correspondence with Peter Oram over the past thirty years.

THE PAGE AND THE FIRE

Russian Poets on Russian Poets – an Anthology Selected, translated from the Russian, introduced and edited by Peter Oram

Parallel text: Russian / English

In this unique anthology, the great figures of Russia's ‘silver age’ – Akhmatova, Tsvetaeva, Mandelstam, Pasternak to name but its brightest stars – reveal how they, despite the great geographical and social distances that often divided them, maintained an intimate, almost metaphysical, kind of contact with one another through poems written in homage to (or indeed, in memory of) one poet by another.

The poems range from epigrammatic miniatures to extended ballads, and several of them appear here in English for the first time. They provide the reader with a new insight into one of the most fertile periods of Russia's literary history and the web of interrelationships of the poets that lay at its heart.

This collection reflects and confirms an inextinguishable vitality in Russian poetic life and the unshakeable faith of the Russian poet in the written word.

THE TRIGGER-HAPPINESS

The Trigger-Happiness is the second collection of poems by Paul Steffan Jones, after the notable success of his first collection Lull of the Bull. His work is heavily loaded with a kind of emotional violence that lurks just beneath the surface, as a constant threat to form and syntax, which are at times barely able to contain it, and thus the poems are in a condition of perpetual tension, which is left to the reader to deal with or resolve in whichever way she or he can. His work has been described as “civilian war poetry”.

Paul Steffan Jones was born in Cardigan, Wales in 1961. His first poetry collection, Lull of the Bull, was published by Starborn Books in 2010.

VALAISIAN QUATRAINS

translated by Peter Oram

The great German poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) spent the last years of his life in the Canton of Valais, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Here he completed his two most important works, the Sonnets to Orpheus and the Duino Elegies. Both as a kind of postscript to these and as a homage to the region that had now become his home, he wrote four cycles of short poems; these were however not in his native German, but in French, and it is one of these cycles, the Valaisian Quatrains, that is presented in this book in the original French, together with an English verse translation by Peter Oram.

These poems reveal a spacious, light-filled landscape that is not only a portrait of this part of Switzerland but is also Rilke’s vision of a transfigured countryside that lies beyond the merely physical and geographical. The apparent simplicity which may be the impression of a first reading is deceptive, and each time one comes back to these verses one is rewarded with rare new insights into a transcendent world.

VIN GAI, VIN TRISTE

The first collection of poems by Russian poetess Hanna Strom to appear in translation, this parallel text (Russian/German) edition introduces a new and refreshing voice to non-Russian readers, one that follows the footsteps of Akhmatova and Tsvetaeva but with a measure of ironic humour that probes the everyday hypocrisies of personal relationships. An Russian/English edition is also to be published in due course.

WHITE AND OTHER POEMS

Peter Oram's first collection opens with a sequence of 13 poems in which 'white' may refer to the blank page, a hospital bedsheet, a bleached seashell, or to human consciousness as a brief period of illumination between darknesses. Music, exile, and the precariousness of life are recurring themes in many of the other poems.
