BANG-UP FOR MEN – The Smell of Prison

He used to teach art to schoolkids, but now his pupils are prisoners, his classroom’s a prison. He enters naïve, struggles to survive, but an ideal begins to grow in him: to break the endless cycle of release and reimprisonment that so many of his students are locked into. But the big question is: Who is teaching whom?

Bang-up for Men is a book with many levels. It is humorous and entertaining, yet also probes the darker, more sinister sides of prison life. The many colourful characters encountered in this book bring it alive as you begin to see the world through their eyes. You are taken through sterile, shiny corridors under glaring fluorescent lights, and along the landings to your own cell where, finally, you are banged up and left on your own. Or are you?

What they said about BANG-UP…

“THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE FUNNIEST AND MOST POIGNANT NARRATIVES ON PRISON LIFE EVER … CAPTURES THE ABSURDITY AND BANALITY OF PRISON LIFE LIKE NO BOOK I’VE EVER READ. CONGRATULATIONS ON A VERY FINE PIECE OF WORK” – ERWIN JAMES, The Guardian

“THIS IS A VALUABLE NEW ADDITION TOTHE CANON OF WRITING ABOUT PRISON LIFE” – ANGELA NEUSTATTER

“THE AUTHOR SPARES THE READER NO DETAIL OF WHAT GOES ON IN THE HEARTS AND MINDS OF PRISONERS. THE RESULT IS NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED…” – LORD RAMSBOTHAM OF KENSINGTON, GCB CBE, Chairman of Koestler Awards Trust and Former Chief Inspector of Prisons

“…THE BOOK I WISHED I’D BEEN ABLE TO WRITE… SENSITIVE OBSERVATIONS AND HILARIOUS COMMENTARY…” – ANGELA FINDLAY, Arts in Prison Projects, Koestler Trust Euro

COUNTRY BOY

COUNTRY BOY Reminiscences 1947-1972

Paul Groves’ account of a journey from the innocence of childhood to the first independent achievements of adulthood, via the hazardous straits of adolescence, will strike a familiar chord with many a reader whose formative years were the sixties and seventies. Yet it is not only this sharing of common experiences which makes this book, once started, so hard to put down, but also the reader’s inevitable delight in the colour and flow of the narrative, and in what Craig Raine has called Groves’ “technical skill, crisp imagery, intelligent irony, and an attractively sour outlook on life”. Such qualities are particularly evident in the later chapters, where religion has to face the wholly unfair competition of sex and, of course, loses.

PAUL GROVES (born 1947) is an established and widely recognised poet, whose work has been acknowledged by his winning of numerous prizes, including theTimes Literary Supplement Prize, the Orbis International Prize, The Charterhouse Award, and the Bournemouth Festival Award. Four collections of his poetry have been published, and a fifth is to appear shortly. Paul Groves has worked for nearly twenty years as a lecturer in creative writing, and has given countless readings of his work, both live and on television and radio.

HOLM by Peter Naumann

HOLM cover front

Paperback with flaps, 98 pp  ISBN 978 1 899530 50 2   price  £7.50

Peter Naumann made his striking debut as a poet in 2014 with the publication of his first book WINTER COUNT.

Holm, at once oak and island, evokes Bristol and its environs, where Peter Naumann’s new poems were made. The dark-leaved
mediterranean tree which contributes so much to the city’s mosaic of light and shadow, and the domed islands in the Severn, stepping
stones on the way to Wales by water, can each stand as figures for a place – and a time – which, though by turns cryptic, lonely, and
precarious, nevertheless retains a sly humour and a stubborn faith, and somehow remains home.

Samantha Wynne Rhydderch said of Peter Naumann’s
previous collection, Winter Count: “The poems are like
x-rays, revealing the unseen
essence of people and the
objects they live with.”

IN CAEVOEIRO by Peter Oram

Peter Oram

IN CARVOEIRO AND OTHER SEQUENCES Paperback – December 7, 2015

“In Carvoeiro & Other Sequences” has beautiful lyrical impact in its unusual and startling capacity for making language new in its arrangements and phrases. It also stood out through the sophisticated mastery of closed and open forms contained within it. The sonnet sequence is stunning. It is very difficult to write in this strict form with the naturalness of measured voice that Peter Oram achieves. This contrasts well against the looser, spacious and organic verse sequence ‘Six Premature Ejaculations’ that shows daring in both form and content.” – Bob Beagrie & Andy Willoughby

Peter Oram was born in Cardiff in 1947, and has first class honours degrees in modern languages and composition. He has been active as writer, composer, translator, painter and guitarist. His publications include the novels Maddocks (Gomer 1997) and The Rub (Starborn 2001), The Page and the Fire (translations from the Russian, Arc 2007), three volumes of Rilke’s French poetry in English translation; two volumes of poetry, White and Tease it Free (Starborn 2001 and 2012). JUST MIND YOUR LANGUAGE

Illustrations by Diane Walkey and Peggy Lindig.

This little book is a compilation of all the verses in books 1 and 2 of ‘Windows Open Wide”, gathered together on their own primarily as a resource book for teachers who find such material useful for their classes but who may not want to use a classroom language-book at this stage – or for those who ARE using W.O.W. but would also appreciate the convenience of having verses easily to hand in a separate volume. However it may also be seen simply a collection of humorous verse for young children – or as a first adventure into the patterns and structures of the English language, and as such will not only entertain and amuse but also accustom the reader to the way that language works and lead him or her to a gradual understanding of grammar, syntax and idiom. It may be used to great advantage by teachers of quite a wide range of age groups, since the verses, while straightforward and simple and sometimes in the ‘nonsense’ tradition, are not silly or condescending, and it is hoped that the book will find a welcome particularly in special needs and literacy classes. Each verse deals with a specific point of grammar, usage or, in one or two cases, vocabulary groups; these are indicated in the index in brackets after each title for the benefit of teacher or parent. Many of the verses are rhythm-based, i.e. they are at their best when recited boldly and rhythmically, perhaps by the whole group, which can be split into two for the several items that are in dialogue form. Such work will help to imprint the various patterns in the minds of the pupils, and bring liveliness and fun into the class.

LANDSKER

A drama of divided loyalties, and a vivid exploration of the conflict between the constraints of convention and the right to freedom of the individual, this book is a good deal more than the romantic novel that it first appears to be. Set in the 1920s, against the background of the miners’ strike, it follows a young Englishwoman living in West Wales through a period of intense emotional crisis, when she must face the challenge of being true to herself against all the odds.

FAY WELDON has described this book as “…a massive and thorough work: a dramatised history, intelligent, fair and perspicacious…”

LULL OF THE BULL

Although this is the first collection by Cardigan poet Paul Steffan Jones, he is already well represented in the better poetry magazines, and it can only serve to consolidate and enhance his status as a poet with a strikingly original voice. He draws a potent personal mythology out of the Welsh landscape, penetrating its dark, visceral essence and illuminating with a curious light its intimate interior.

“You will only know your true name
when it is almost too late
and the buttercups burst through each pore
to make a bouquet of you…”

“He writes like no one else. Paul Steffan Jones’ poems in their squeakily hinged way… smash a poetry shaped fist through the dull inertia found on 99% of bookshops’ poetry shelves…”

MADDOCKS, or how to discover America

A thrilling yet moving novel for teenagers – the story of a boy on the run who has mysterious links with Madoc, the Welsh prince who is said to have discovered America in the 12th century. Maddocks is unhappy, longing for the unbroken family he never had, and for his absent father – his idealised picture of whom little matches the reality. Not trusting the love of his stepfather and stepbrother, he runs away from his home in Wales to Ireland. David, his stepbrother, sets off in search of him. But running like an undercurrent beneath the surface is another journey westwards, over eight hundred years before…

“Full of feeling and fine writing…” (The School Librarian, Aug. 1999)

“A well-told tale that is both entertaining and thought-provoking…” (Ninnau, Nov. 1999)

ORCHARDS

translated from the French by Peter Oram and Alex Barr

Of the over 400 poems that Rilke wrote in French, the cycle Vergers is probably the most important. Orchards is a new translation of that work, in which Rilke explores in concise and almost epigrammatic verses the relationship between the poet, his sources of inspiration and the reader.

Also included in this volume is an essay by Peter Oram which discusses the extraordinarily complex structure, based on principles of symmetry and the Golden Section, underlying this work.

POEMS

Ruthlessly honest and self-critical, the poems of Phil Malleson are the chronicles of a highly sensitive and uncompromising individual for whom aloneness and poverty were preferable to collusion in a corrupt, money-and-power-obsessed culture bent on the destruction of itself and its habitat. Their vocabulary and idiom often appear rough-cut and produced off the cuff, yet closer examination shows a conscious and exceptionally widely-read mind at work. Malleson wrote elsewhere of the ‘hundreds of drafts’ many of his poems had to go through before he could let them be, and the sometimes (seemingly) waywardly stretched syntax seems to keep guard over a lyricism that is always trying to get through. All the poems in this book are taken from Phil Malleson’s sporadic correspondence with Peter Oram over the past thirty years.

THE PAGE AND THE FIRE

Russian Poets on Russian Poets – an Anthology Selected, translated from the Russian, introduced and edited by Peter Oram

Parallel text: Russian / English

In this unique anthology, the great figures of Russia’s ‘silver age’ – Akhmatova, Tsvetaeva, Mandelstam, Pasternak to name but its brightest stars – reveal how they, despite the great geographical and social distances that often divided them, maintained an intimate, almost metaphysical, kind of contact with one another through poems written in homage to (or indeed, in memory of) one poet by another.

The poems range from epigrammatic miniatures to extended ballads, and several of them appear here in English for the first time. They provide the reader with a new insight into one of the most fertile periods of Russia’s literary history and the web of interrelationships of the poets that lay at its heart.

This collection reflects and confirms an inextinguishable vitality in Russian poetic life and the unshakeable faith of the Russian poet in the written word.

THE TRIGGER-HAPPINESS

The Trigger-Happiness is the second collection of poems by Paul Steffan Jones, after the notable success of his first collection Lull of the Bull. His work is heavily loaded with a kind of emotional violence that lurks just beneath the surface, as a constant threat to form and syntax, which are at times barely able to contain it, and thus the poems are in a condition of perpetual tension, which is left to the reader to deal with or resolve in whichever way she or he can. His work has been described as “civilian war poetry”.

Paul Steffan Jones was born in Cardigan, Wales in 1961. His first poetry collection, Lull of the Bull, was published by Starborn Books in 2010.

A fascinating and detailed glimpse into the world of international diplomacy by one who dedicated his life to that world. Sir Archie illuminates the vital role the diplomatic service has played, and continues to play, having to adapt itself to the demands and pressures of a rapidly changing and increasingly perilous world.

REVIEW  (Zeals Village News) :  ”Sir Archie Lamb, author of “A Long Way From Swansea”, has published a second volume of memoirs entitled “ The World Moves On”. Sir Archie described his journey from wales to the Heftyehus, the British Ambassador’s residence in Oslo, in his first book; but it was, as he puts it, a Life without the Times. Now we learn more about the wider situation, including such riddles as to why an Arabic specialist should be sent to Norway. The answer is simple – oil.

Sir Archie joined the Foreign Office as a Clerical Officer in 1938 just after his 17th Birthday. He had “a good war”, as his superiors noted, and was able to put the lessons he had learned in the RAF about leadership, management and administration to good use as the Foreign Office gradually became m ore accessible to talent rather than privilege. He found himself learning Arabic at the Middle East Centre for Arab Studies in Lebanon at the time of the disastrous Suez adventure and shortly afterwards became the first Clerical Officer to break through the glass ceiling and become a “First Secretary” in the Political Residency in Bahrain. This was followed later by a puzzling transfer to to the Diplomatic Service Inspectorate, though it soon becomes apparent that the Foreign Office knew what they were doing, as Sir Archie proved to be an Inspector of the highest quality. So to Oslo – and then to Zeals”.
The following letter from Dr Ian Olson in Aberdeen was published in The Spectator of 31 October : “Sir: In his letter of 24 October, the 94 year old Sir Archie Lamb modestly does not mention that he ably describes the evolution of the Diplomatic Service from pure diplomacy to the promotion of “trade” in his latest memoir “The World Moves On”. This is history from the inside as he rises from pre-war filing clerk (with a break as a Hurricane and Typhoon pilot) to Ambassador and the Diplomatic Service Inspectorate”.
Ian Olson is well known in Scotland as medical man, author and academic, well-nigh a polymath, who has published books on Scottish history, culture and traditions.

VALAISIAN QUATRAINS

translated by Peter Oram

The great German poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) spent the last years of his life in the Canton of Valais, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Here he completed his two most important works, the Sonnets to Orpheus and the Duino Elegies. Both as a kind of postscript to these and as a homage to the region that had now become his home, he wrote four cycles of short poems; these were however not in his native German, but in French, and it is one of these cycles, the Valaisian Quatrains, that is presented in this book in the original French, together with an English verse translation by Peter Oram.

These poems reveal a spacious, light-filled landscape that is not only a portrait of this part of Switzerland but is also Rilke’s vision of a transfigured countryside that lies beyond the merely physical and geographical. The apparent simplicity which may be the impression of a first reading is deceptive, and each time one comes back to these verses one is rewarded with rare new insights into a transcendent world.

VIN GAI, VIN TRISTE

The first collection of poems by Russian poetess Hanna Strom to appear in translation, this parallel text (Russian/German) edition introduces a new and refreshing voice to non-Russian readers, one that follows the footsteps of Akhmatova and Tsvetaeva but with a measure of ironic humour that probes the everyday hypocrisies of personal relationships. An Russian/English edition is also to be published in due course.

WHITE AND OTHER POEMS

Peter Oram’s first collection opens with a sequence of 13 poems in which ‘white’ may refer to the blank page, a hospital bedsheet, a bleached seashell, or to human consciousness as a brief period of illumination between darknesses. Music, exile, and the precariousness of life are recurring themes in many of the other poems.

WINDOWS OPEN WIDE (book three)

by Peter Oram, with drawings by Diane Walkey. This is the third book in this series, and although its general format is similar to that of the other two books, it is different in that the reading texts in this book are aimed more at the pupil of, say, 12 – 13, and in each of the sixteen chapters the text is in effect a ‘mini-biography’ of some British man or woman who has in one way or another contributed to society – personalites that have been chosen include Queen Elizabeth I, Eric Clapton, Richard Branson, Grace Darling and Wilfred Thesiger. The remainder of each chapter includes comprehension exercises on the text and vocabulary relating to it, and introduces a suggested grammar topic, with drills and practice routines related to it; interspersed among these, furthermore, are jokes, riddles and quotes from Shakespeare et al. Also included are songs and poems/verses that are usually related in some way to the texts, and suggestions for imaginative activities and role-playing.
