by Peter Oram, with drawings by Diane Walkey. This is the third book in this series, and although its general format is similar to that of the other two books, it is different in that the reading texts in this book are aimed more at the pupil of, say, 12 - 13, and in each of the sixteen chapters the text is in effect a 'mini-biography' of some British man or woman who has in one way or another contributed to society - personalites that have been chosen include Queen Elizabeth I, Eric Clapton, Richard Branson, Grace Darling and Wilfred Thesiger. The remainder of each chapter includes comprehension exercises on the text and vocabulary relating to it, and introduces a suggested grammar topic, with drills and practice routines related to it; interspersed among these, furthermore, are jokes, riddles and quotes from Shakespeare et al. Also included are songs and poems/verses that are usually related in some way to the texts, and suggestions for imaginative activities and role-playing.
