In 2000 he won third prizes in both the National Poetry Competition and the Peterloo Poetry Competition. His first collection, Letting in the Carnival, was published by Peterloo in 1984.
Alex Barr was born in Manchester and educated at Manchester Grammar School. After seven years in journalism in various cities, he studied at Portsmouth Polytechnic and was awarded a Diploma in Architecture with distinction in 1972. Most of his subsequent career was as a senior lecturer in the Art & Design Faculty at Manchester Polytechnic (now MMU). He is married to Rosemarie, a ceramic artist.
